Keeper of Kingston, New York’s History and Heritage. Since 1965.

In New York State history, Kingston holds a singular place:

  • New York State’s third oldest city founded in 1652.
  • New York State’s birthplace in 1777.
  • New York State’s largest still extant early Dutch settlement.

The Friends of Historic Kingston (FHK) aims to ensure that our vital
Colonial legacy and the succeeding chapters in the city’s history endure. We work to preserve the buildings, sites and neighborhoods that tell Kingston’s story, and to promote the legacy through exhibits and programs at our two museums, walking tours of Kingston’s national historic districts, and publications.

A Passion for Kingston’s Past
Founded in 1965, Friends of Historic Kingston is a volunteer organization whose members value the city’s past and want to assume an active role
in safeguarding it. We view the city’s historic fabric as an asset that enhances the quality of life for residents and offers an uncommonly rich experience for visitors.

Visit Our Home.
Our home on the corner of Wall and Main Streets in the 1658 Stockade National Historic District has long been a visual landmark in uptown Kingston. There we maintain two museums: the circa 1812 Federal style Fred J. Johnston House and the adjacent Friends of Historic Kingston Museum. Our doors are open May-October, Saturday-Sunday, 1-4 p.m., or by special appointment. 845-339-0720.
